Content

This database contains an English translation of the Chumash, Rashi Commentary, and Text Footnotes, as found in the Metsudah Chumash/Rashi, Copyright (c) 1991, 1993 by Avrohom Davis, Nachum Y. Kornfeld, and Abraham B. Walzer. This text is also known as the Pentateuch or the Five books of Moses, which begin the Bible's Old Testament.

Each record is based on a Chapter from one of the Five Books; it is either the Text of the Chumash itself, or the Text of the Rashi Commentary available on that section of Text, or it is a list of the Footnotes on that text. All of this has been dynamically hyperlinked in a variety of ways, with a promise of more to come.

At this time the associated Hebrew Text is not available in the online version, but can be obtained in the new Linear Translation, hardcopy available from KTAV Publishing House, Inc., 900 Jefferson Street, Hoboken, NJ 07030. You can order by phone 201-963-9524 or contact Simcha Graphics by e-mail at nachumk@erols.com. We are also working on ways to make the Hebrew available online, and will keep you posted on our progress.

You can always return to the Main Search Form from the bottom of any Chapter.

Qualifying the Search

To limit your search to a particular Parsha, use the Parsha pull-down menu and click on the Parsha of your choice. You can also limit your search by Book or by Chapter in the same manner, or any combination thereof. Enter the words or concepts you want to find in the Text box, then click on the GO button.

Let's say you have selected the Parsha "Chayei Sarah", and put your query "Sarah and Avraham" into the Text box. 3 Records will be found as opposed to 20 if the entire Chumash is searched. Note the default is to search "-Any-" Parsha, Book, and Chapter. If nothing is put into the Text box, all the selected Chapters will come up.

If you simply want to locate a particular Chapter and Verse, go to the Search Form which was designed specifically for that purpose. Perhaps you see a footnote reference marked "Genesis 13:22". From the Main Search Form , select Search By Chapter and Verse . Then select "Genesis" from the Book Menu, "Chapter 13" from the Chapter Menu, and "22" from the Verse Menu. Call up the Chapter shown on the References list, then click on "Move to Verse Selected", to go to the location of that Verse in the Chapter. Or, call up the Rashi Commentary available for that chosen Verse, available from the top of the Chapter.

Concept Sets

Our Concept Search option is enabled. It expands your search terms into sets of items, using the powerful Thesaurus linked to the Metamorph search engine. To limit a word to only forms of the root word, click the Concept Search button off. Or to selectively turn off the concept search for only some of the words in your query, precede that word by a tilde '~':
e.g., "human ~conflict".
Our Thesaurus is smart about varied English transliterations of some imporant Hebrew words, with more on that to come.

Search Results

Once you have submitted your search request by clicking on GO, you'll see a list of resulting Chumash references which match your query. When you click on a particular reference, the full text of that Chapter will appear. Click on the top highlighted line, "Move to Text Matched by your Query" to move to the words in the text which satisfied the search request, which will be highlighted. Click on those highlighted words to move to the next occurrence of a match in that Chapter, if there is one.
